Sperm Banks : Donor 44

.
The issue of sperm banks has always baffled me. How this idea ever became a reality I will never understand.

For those of you who do not know, sperm banks are clinics where sperm is stored to later be used for artificial insemination. I agree with this when it is used by a couple who are having a difficult time conceiving, I agree with this when a man is suffering from a disease and needs to save some sperm for when he meets a would-be mother of his children, but I DO NOT agree with it, when some lonely woman (or even couples) go in there to get pregnant by an anonymous sperm donor!

The first two sperm banks were opened in Iowa City, USA and Tokyo, Japan in 1964. Currently, those babies have grown up. And because a donor could donate several times, that means each man can have several babies, who are actually brothers and sisters, who have no idea that they are brother and sister. I mean what if they get married??

I always wondered about this, but what brought this is up is a show I was just watching, which had 2 sisters who somehow found each other by looking up the clinic and 'donor 44' on a website. How sad is that?

I looked at their mom's and they were both beautiful intelligent woman. Which confused me even more. Why would an intelligent woman make such a decision. How selfish can a woman be to want to have a fatherless child? Instead of adopting and taking care of a child, (while letting that child know they are adopted of course).

Also, what kind of government allows babies to just grow without knowing their biological heritage?

I don't get it, I really don't.

    Men do it for money.
Women do it because they want children but can't have/don't want to have husbands (desperate).

In my opinion, I think it's unfair for the child.

This constitutes one of socety's all time moral debates. There is no black on white on this subject matter in my opinion, however the point you raised regarding genetic brother/sisters coming together is certainly valid!

    scary stuff

    You're a very opinionated creature, aren't you?

In my personal opinion, if that has any value to you, I believe that it is down to the mother-to-be. You don't know her circumstances. I have a friend whose thinking about artificial insemination with donated sperm because she has a disease that will make her impotent in less than three years, and her life's dream is to have a child. Now, tell me, what is she supposed to do? Have a whirlwind wedding and sex with a man she will hardly have time to get to know just for the sake of his sperm? It could be that the woman is a lesbian and does not want a man she knows to impregnate her, but would rather pick an anonymous donor who fits her criteria. I think your encouragement to have people adopt children instead of using a sperm bank is really unfair; wouldn't you want to have a little girl with the same eyes, nose, lips, laugh, etc.. as you? A mini-me, if you will... someone who, when people get to see, they'll squeal and say how alike you two look? It could be, it could be, it could be, there are a lot of instances where anonymous donors really are the way to go, and there are some women who do it because they have the choice. Ah, choice, I'm sure you are familiar with it. It's what makes people abort babies and use anonymous sperm. Although too much choice can be a terrible thing, I believe it is, primarily, down to the mother-to-be. And who are we to judge her.

I'm a junior now.. but ever since I was a freshman there's been this ad in the school paper twice a week every week for the past three years:
"Donate your eggs or sperm to an infertile couple-- $5,000 or more"
You'd be surprised how many people said they've considered it.

What I really want to know is if they give them porn hah.

"Why would an intelligent woman make such a decision."

Coz an intelligent woman knows not to want an actual man as part of the parenthood deal. His sperm is all we need, the rest can be discraded :)

It is all about the sexual liberation, and some women's attempts of get rid of a male infested world ... In their opinion they shouldn't rely on a man to have a good life and family ...

Believe me the concept of families is not gonna be the same 10 years from now ....

If a woman has a disease and she cant have kids now she could freeze her eggs until the right guy comes along and then implant the embryos when shes ready. If shes a lesbian then she doesnt have to have kids .
I believe every kid should have a mom and dad . The child has a right to know his parents if they are alive and he should have a traditional family a mom and dad who loved each other and decided to have kids. Sperm bank should be illegal and children should have fathers that they can get to know.

3baid: True, but how do they think it is right?

    adorra: Agreed.

Entre: What is your black and white opinions on the subject. Personally, I only see one color.

Moe: I truly am :) You mention choice, isn't it unfair to decide on not giving the child a choice to know their father?

KD: I'll have a jar of pickles and two vials of superman sperm.

Leen: I think they do. People do anything for money!

Hanan: You must have yet to meet a man.

    sty: some??

    jewaira: I have to disagree.

fractal: I think so too. Its just taking feminism too far.

    Black: :)

Anon: I fully agree with you. Well said!

    Wilted: Me 2.

I don't think you can point to the degredation of society via artificial insemination. If you want to go there - let's talk about how many gay men in Kuwait marry and have children. Really - which is worse? I am with Moe and Hanan. It is really a woman's choice. What about the percentage of Kuwaiti society that are "spinsters" but want children? 3baid - why is that "desperate"? If Kuwait was a Western society, it would be a woman's CHOICE. God gave us all moral barometers and each one of us has a different view. Moreover, it would also be the choice of unmarried women to have legal abortions and not have to marry just anybody to cover it up - or worse: having it beaten out of her by zealous relatives.

    Sty: :P

Anon: You are putting words in my mouth. I did not say that artificial insemination is causing the degredation of society.

I said anonymous artificial insemination is immoral.

You talk about the west. Well, we are not the west. Nor do I think we should be.
And you know what, if western soceity were more like Kuwait, a child would not be born without the CHOICE of knowing who their father is.

Knowing who your father is, is a human basic right. Being a spinster does not give a woman the right to take that away from her child.

    I stand by my opinion.
